  5. theory of evolution assumed that acquired
  6. characters were passed from parent to
  7. offspring. Modern evolutionary theory does
  8. not recognize the inheritance of acquired
  9. characters because there is no reliable
  10. scientific evidence that it occurs, and
  11. because no mechanism is known whereby bodily
  12. changes can influence the genetic material.
